4 Common Carpet Maintenance Mistakes

HomeBlog4 Common Carpet Maintenance Mistakes

Carpet is one of the more popular options for flooring today with good reason. It isn’t cold underfoot early in the morning, muffles those loud steps during the late hours, and can even soften the blow if something is dropped on it. While these are all things homeowners are aware of, some things not widely known regarding carpet are ways to prolong its life and keep it maintained. In fact, most homeowners tend to get it wrong when it comes to carpet maintenance. Here are 4 common carpet maintenance mistakes:

1.  Forcefully scrubbing a carpet stain with a colored rag. This is by far one of the most common mistakes made by homeowners when caring for their carpet. When cleaning up spills on carpets, it’s always best to blot the spill site with a non-colored rag. Scrubbing causes the carpet fibers to untwist and fray at the ends, while using a colored rag creates potential for the color of the rag to bleed through into the carpet.

2.  Using More Cleaning Solution Than Necessary. This is a case where less is more. When you use an overabundance of cleaning solution on your carpet, you increase how much overall residue will be left within the carpet’s fibers. This leads to damage because residue attracts dirt, and dirt buildup in carpet can be problematic.

3.  Using a deodorizing powder, the incorrect way. When using a deodorizing powder on carpet, it’s important to note a few things such as the quality of the powder and the quality of your vacuum cleaner. Subpar deodorizers have a higher chance to leave behind a gunky residue if not vacuumed up properly by a strong vacuum cleaner.

4.  Not cleaning up a spill the instant it happens. By allowing a spill to sit on your carpet, the carpet over time begins to soak, and when soaking happens, the spill is absorbed deeper into the padding. This opens the door for foul odors and mold to move in. Deal with those spills ASAP– don’t use a colored rag or vigorously scrub the mess, though.
